Jesmond is arguably the jewel of Newcastle. It is a cosmopolitan and lively place to live. Its houses and flats are some of the most expensive and desirable in Newcastle. Just outside Newcastle city centre, it is within easy walking distance of the city. Jesmond has a real village feel to it. It is home to both professionals and students with a happy mix of the two. There is a significant property rental market catering to all tastes and budgets. Many of its substantial Victorian terraced properties have been converted into stylish apartments and as such Jesmond has a great mix of properties to choose from.
Osborne Road lies at the heart of bustling Jesmond. Lined with bars and restaurants, it has become the place to be 'seen' on a night out. The food on offer here ranges from posh pub grub, to Spanish Tapas and Indian Curries, as well as Italian and Asian cuisine. Acorn Road is the focus for shopping in Jesmond. Here you will find everthing from coffee shops and cobblers to chic independent designer boutiques.
Professionals who rent go for either conversion apartments within houses, or alternatively there are some modern new-build apartments in both Jesmond and Jesmond Vale. The new-build flats are particularly popular with the rental market as they are situated very close to the Metro and so one can literally fall out of bed in the morning and onto the train! However, if the budget will stretch far enough, there are some substantial family homes to rent.
Students flats and apartments are mainly concentrated around streets containing upper and lower Tyneside flats. Peculiar to the North East, Tyneside flats are generally in a terrace and from the front look like an ordinary house, except that there are two front doors next to each other. One door leads to the ground floor flat, usually a two bedroom, and the other leads to the upper flat which may have anywhere between three and six bedrooms. If you are looking for something bigger, then there are student houses available, ranging anywhere from four to eight bedrooms.
Shared accommodation is a relatively new phenomenon in Jesmond, but its popularity is growing fast. Tenants looking for a house share or flatshare tend to be young professionals between the ages of 20 and 30 who have recently left university or college and are moving out of their student flat. They stil want to live with others and so make new friends along the way, but they expect a flatshare to have all 'mod cons'.
