Heaton - Newcastle

Literally meaning 'High Town' as it is an area situated on the hills above the Ouseburn, Heaton has a similar mix of properties to Jesmond, in that there are substantial houses and also a great many tyneside flats. It is this variety that draws an eclectic mix of people to live in Heaton. Students also like Heaton as it has excellent transport links to the City Centre and Universities and is somewhat cheaper than renting in Jesmond.

Chillingham Road is the main shopping street running through Heaton. It has seen a revival in recent years and now boasts an independent grocery shop selling all manner of produce, alongside coffee shops, a supermarket and delicatessens.

Further north lies High Heaton where you can find The Freeman Hospital, a major employer in the area. Large numbers of hospital staff opt to buy or rent a home in High Heaton immediately adjacent to the hospital so that they can be within walking distance of work. The houses are 1930's semis, ideal for renting as a family home.

On the edge of Heaton, technically in Longbenton is the Government's DSS building, another major employer in the area. Many employees new to the DSS opt to rent in Heaton whilst they settle into their new job.
